In the UK, the use of tooth whitening is regulated under the Cosmetics Directive and is NOT classified as a Medical Device. DENTSPLY amended its product offering in early 2012 to comply with the new EU legislation which came into force from 31st October 2012. DENTSPLY only sells products below the 6% hydrogen peroxide (HP) level and has updated its packaging to mirror the new directive;

• It can only be sold to dental practitioners; not directly to retail
• It must have their first use within the dental office
• For the rest of the cycle of use, can be performed by consumers themselves as long as access to the product is via the dental practitioner.
• It cannot be used on patients under 18 years of age

DENTSPLY's Illuminé™ tooth whitening system has been widely used in the USA and Europe since 2001. Backed by clinical studies, and years of clinical use, you can rest assured that Illuminé is a tried and tested system.

Illuminé is supplied at two concentrations of carbamide peroxide (CP); 10% CP and 15% CP with fluoride. These two concentrations are roughly equivalent to 3.6% and 5.4% HP, respectively.

Illuminé is very patient friendly. The pre-mixed gel is applied into specially made trays, which are worn for two hours, or overnight, for a period of two weeks (or as directed). Illuminé is supplied in an attractive cosmetic bag which contains everything the patient needs to whiten their teeth in the comfort of their own home.
